In 2024, Slaney Farms made strong progress in reducing packaging-related environmental impacts, particularly in plastic usage. Plastic pallet wrap usage per unit of output decreased from 0.1351 kg/t in 2023 to 0.1204 kg/t, outperforming the milestone target by 10.9%. This reduction was largely driven by operational efficiencies and changes in customer packaging preferences.

A key contributor to this improvement was the increased demand from the retail sector for smaller bag sizes. This shift enabled the use of Slaney Farms’ palletizer machine, which allows for pallet configurations that do not require plastic wrapping. Additionally, for mainstream retail supply, the use of outer packaging meant that only the top layer of boxes required wrapping, further reducing plastic consumption.

Another major achievement in 2024 was the significant increase in the use of cellulose netting. Usage rose from 0% in 2023 to 78% in 2024, far exceeding the milestone target by 21.9%. This transition to more sustainable packaging materials reflects Slaney Farms’ commitment to reducing plastic waste and supporting circular economy principles.

By achieving this target, the company successfully prevented 268kg of plastic from entering the market. Recognising the impact of this change, Slaney Farms has updated its projections and aims to maintain a reduction of 260kg for the remainder of the plan period.
